The UK Discovers Eco Wallpaper
October 22nd, 2008Eco wallpaper is on a roll from dailymail.co.uk

The paint hasn’t yet dried on my walls, but already I am thinking about improvements! This, of course, is not a very ecological attitude.
But with more and more interior options with genuine ‘green credentials’ to choose from it is becoming easier to find an acceptable excuse to indulge my (non-pregnancy-associated!) nesting instincts.
Eco wallpaper is my newest discovery – and one that I originally looked into without much hope. There are so many potential pitfalls: high production emission levels, the use of water-polluting inks, and, most importantly, the possibility that the paper quality might be similar to my recycled loo roll…
Imagining all sorts of ‘proud-to-be-green’ but decoratively disastrous wallpapers, I was pleased to discover EcoCentric’s collection of ‘no compromise needed’ Forest Stewardship Council-certified (FSC) wallpapers, which includes a Graham & Brown range.
These are made using paper that has either been recycled or sourced from a responsibly managed forest. They are then dyed with water-based inks that release none of the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) so commonly found in conventional wallpapers. (VOCs are potentially health-damaging gases given off long after the wallpaper’s been hung.)
The Graham & Brown designs, created by students from London’s Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design (so essentially, for me, locally sourced!), each represent an environmental message. Don’t be put off: this actually translates into a subtle, stylish range of beautiful prints, such as ‘Bittern’.
Also part of EcoCentric’s collection – although a bit pricier – is the playfully coloured, hand-finished ‘Pavilion Birds’ (which would brighten up an old chest of drawers).
What’s more, even B&Q is moving in a green direction with its Eco Divine wallpapers made from 100 per cent FSC paper and water-based inks, which also come in biodegradable packaging.
And if you’re looking for something plain, Urbane Living has a great choice of hemp wallpaper, which comes from a renewable source and in a variety of colours.
So I’m thrilled. These gorgeous wallpapers are a giant leap in the right eco-interior direction, giving me great hope for the future –
and some lovely ideas for the alcoves in my new house.

A question of paste
- It is possible to make your own non-toxic wallpaper paste from ingredients such as flour, alum and cloves (which work as a natural preservative). Check out the recipe on care2.com.
- Although the DIY greenies advocate home-made wallpaper paste, I’m not brave enough to follow their recipes yet. For a chemical-free, shop-bought option, go for more dependable, well-known organic household brands such as Auro, whose 389 Wallpaper Paste costs £10 for 0.2kg, auro.co.uk.
Breathe easy
- If you’ve just hung conventional wallpaper and are worried about the VOCs, you can use indoor plants to get rid of them – such as a beautiful peace lily (aka Spathiphyllum), from £5.50, houseofplants.co.uk

Maya Romanoff Present Wood Inlay
August 11th, 2008We have seen very few companies use the wood veneer cut design effect. When done correctly it is quite stunning. We met a wonderful company at the HDExpo in 2008 that used the wood inlay look very effectively. In the future the artistry of emerging designer David Xian ill be known.
